A Short History of The Rusty Nail
The first time that The Rusty Nail came into existence was the year of 1937. It was known as the “B.I.F”, and it was a mixture of Scotch and Drambuie, much like the drink that we know and love today. The Rusty Nail continued to evolve for the next few years, and it took awhile for it to finally earn its own name and iconic recipe. Before it acquired the name “The Rusty Nail”, it was referred to as both “D&S”, and “Little Club No. 1”.
Finally, in the early 1960s, The Rusty Nail acquired its iconic name. The creation of The Rusty Nail recipe is often attributed to the “21 Club” that was located in Manhattan, and the name was cemented when the chairwoman of Drambuie Liqueur Company endorsed the drink. The Rusty Nail was one of the main drinks that the infamous Rat Pack consumed, and this fact is most likely why it managed to grow so quickly in popularity.
Today, it’s still as popular as it once was. It has remained a favorite among many, and it most likely will not be going away anytime soon.

How to Make Your Own Rusty Nail
- 4.5 cl (9 parts) Scotch Whisky
- 2.5 cl (5 parts) Drambuie
- Lemon Twist
- Ice
Fill a 16-ounce glass completely with crushed ice. Then, pour in the five parts of Drambuie and the nine parts of Scotch. Make sure to stir very gently, as you do not want to move the ice too much. Stir until a thick frost develops on top of the drink. Use the lemon twist as garnish, and enjoy!

There is also The Railroad Spike, which has become a very popular brunch drink. It consists of four parts of cold brew coffee, and one part Drambuie. Generally, it is served in a very tall glass with crushed iced.
The Clavo Ahumado, which is Spanish for “smoky nail”, is also a great choice. This adaptation contains mezcal instead of the traditional Scotch.
Last but not least, don’t forget The Donald Sutherland. This drink has Canadian Rye Whiskey instead of Scotch, and people rave about it." - Source
